DID YOU KNOW
Every adult should have a Healthcare Power of Attorney, a document that authorizes another person to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so. The document also authorizes medical personnel to share information about a medical condition with the person(s) named under the Healthcare Power of Attorney.
IF YOU ARE THE PARENT OF A CHILD 18 OR OLDER, THIS MESSAGE IS ESPECIALLY RELEVANT FOR YOU. If your “adult” child is sick or hurt, you may be unable to obtain information about their condition unless you have their Healthcare Power of Attorney. And it doesn’t matter if that child is your dependent or covered under your insurance plan. The rules under HIPPA prevail!
